TREASURES OF THE DEEP – WHAT DOES A WOMAN’S HANDBAG CONTAIN ?

Gone are the days of looking deep into a woman’s eyes to find true meaning – just look deep into her handbag!

The bits and pieces contained in a woman’s handbag reveal more about her personality, her lifestyle and who she is than months of detective work.   Be warned however, it takes a brave person to venture into those depths – there is a possible risk of attack from a miniature poodle (a la Paris Hilton), uncovering some secret beauty treatment or retrieving a six-week old apple – but if you give it a go, you just may uncover more than you ever imagined!.    

Perennial staples like cosmetics, fragrances, diaries, leather wallets, hair brushes and mirrors are still there in some shape or form but the information age has brought a whole new dimension to handbag contents with the arrival of cellular phones, i-pods and other electronic gadgets.   How far we’ve come since the handbag staples of the forties (ration books, gloves and cigarettes) or the eighties (the bulky and bulging filofax).   A quick search of some celebrity handbags in Australia revealed everyday items like mobile phones, lip balm and keys as well as some more unusual (and revealing) items including bras and dog’s clothes!. 

And it’s clearly not only what’s inside the bag that’s a dead giveaway, but also what’s on the outside.  Australian born author Kathryn Eisman spent two years researching her book ‘How to Tell A Woman By Her Handbag’ in which she lists 40 personality types based on handbag analysis.   The colour, size and shape of women’s handbags speak volumes about their personalities – from classic styles, designer bags, leather handbags and oversized totes to bright colours (which are generally worn by women who are friendly and fun-loving) and classic neutrals (for the more reserved and down-to-earth).

She also says a peek inside a woman’s handbag is a peek inside her soul.  She categorises women into four different types according to the contents of their handbags, creative (organised chaos), prepared (organised and practical), minimal (bare essentials) and expressive (interesting trinkets and random items).

And with rapidly evolving technology and changing fashion, women’s loads are getting lighter.  In 2006, the average handbag weighed 3.5kgs, slimming down to a paltry 1.5kgs in 2009 – a 57% drop in weight, according to a study by British department store, Debenhams.  This is mainly due to advances in technology – where the ‘brick’ mobile phones, PDAs, heavy paper diaries and laptops have been surpassed by slimline mobiles and multifunction machines, such as Blackberries.   Fashion forward women are also wearing miniature fashion handbags, slim clutches which means less is the new more.  

But little does not mean handbags are not big in other ways.  A study revealed that an average woman’s handbag contained items to the value of over two hundred dollars – including mobile phones, purses, leather wallets, cash and make-up
